Listowel Town was purchased by the Hare family from Cork in 1782. The Hare Family purchased the town from the Fitzmaurice s a Norman family that had owned the castle and surrounds for centuries prior. Under new ownership now the town was to see many changes to come.

This site tells the story of several families that for one reason or another came to 53 church st as owners and as tenants to live and to raise their families and to trade on one of Listowels prime streets.

53 church st Listowel Was Purchased by in the summer of 2005 From the Kiely family. It was purchased as a typical property investment where initially it was planned to demolish the old interior , modernize and lease to prospective commercial retailers and residental tenants. This procedure would be typical for some of the older houses in town in order to get them to a commercially viable position.

While taking a closer look at the entire house, it was noticed that the house was in very good condition and is almost 200 yrs old. The owners and tenants down through the years had evidently taken very good care of the house. It was also predominantly family occupied since it was first built in 1819 this helped in keeping the house in such good order. The House was found Intact having escaped any major changes down through the years. The house and its story is a relic of Listowels and Irelands past. This house is a window to our past heritage and history that we may learn from it and use that knowledge to direct us in the future and also to continually remind us where we came from and how we lived. A time where children and families were abundant on the busy street when everyone knew your name and your ancestors' names, too.
